The fact that you sit here,' the Chief of the Staff (Commissioner Brian Peddle) told 82 delegates to The Salvation Army's Catherine Programme Summer School in The Netherlands, 'is for me a sign that God is faithful and meeting leadership needs within the Army.' Opening the 10th annual summer school, the Chief admitted that sometimes it can seem – especially in Europe – that the number of people involved in The Salvation Army is diminishing. But he was encouraged that such a significant group was participating in the event, showing they were committed to the mission and expressing a personal desire to lift their leadership skills to serve within The Salvation Army.

Attending this annual gathering, held in the shadow of the distinctive illuminated hilltop cross, is a premiere event in the territory's annual calendar and has become a family tradition passed on through generations.

As Slovakia says: 'Šťastné Narodeniny Armáda Spásy' (Happy Birthday Salvation Army), the first anniversary of the official opening of The Salvation Army in the country is being marked by the release of an inspiring new documentary film by the International Headquarters Communications Section. Slovakia became the 127th country to have a recognised Salvation Army presence on 1 September 2015.

During spiritually uplifting days in the Argentinian cities of Buenos Aires and Rosário, the visitors met government and other officials, led a congress and admitted Sergeant Iván José Demitre to the Order of the Founder – The Salvation Army's highest honour.


Rio 2016 – Cheering on ‘Team Refugees’ // Aug 3, 2016

Because The Salvation Army meets human needs in 127 countries worldwide, it has historically proved difficult to be partisan when it comes to supporting national teams at the Olympic Games. This year’s sporting showcase is a little different, as a team of refugees – from Africa and the Middle East – will be competing under the Olympic flag. The General Brings Challenge and Thanks in Tonga and Fiji // Aug 3, 2016

Exited officers and soldiers gathered at Tonga's Fuaʻamotu International Airport, enjoying music from New Zealand's Hamilton City Corps Band, as they waited for General André Cox and Commissioner Silvia Cox (World President of Women's Ministries), who were visiting to lead The Salvation Army's 30th anniversary celebrations. The international visitors were accompanied by Commissioners Robert and Janine Donaldson, leaders of the New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga Territory, on what was the first visit to Tonga by a Salvation Army General. While at the airport, the General was introduced to Tonga's Prime Minister, the Hon Samuela 'Akilisi Pohiva.


The General Leads Anniversary Celebrations in Papua New Guinea // Aug 3, 2016

The General and Commissioner Silvia Cox (World President of Women's Ministries) received a traditional welcome on the tarmac at Goroka Airport in Papua New Guinea, where they were to lead 60th anniversary celebrations. Asaro mudmen, covered in mud and wearing large clay masks over their heads, danced and ‘threatened’ with spears and arrows. Exiting the terminal, the international leaders were met by hundreds of Salvationists singing 'From the Rising of the Sun' in three languages.

The President of France, François Hollande, spoke appreciatively about The Salvation Army's commitment to the poor when he officially reopened the refurbished La Cité de Refuge centre in Paris. The President was accompanied by three ministers and two secretaries of state.


The General Encourages Salvationists to Sign Petition to Stand #WithRefugees // Jun 20, 2016

To mark World Refugee Day (20 June), General André Cox is encouraging Salvationists and friends around the world to add their names to a petition organised through the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR). The #WithRefugees petition will be delivered to the UN's headquarters in New York, USA, in September ahead of the UN General Assembly high-level summit to address large movements of refugees and migrants.

World Humanitarian Summit Recognises Crucial Role of Faith Communities in Disaster Prevention // Jun 1, 2016

The importance of faith communities in preventing disasters was one of the key messages at the first World Humanitarian Summit, held in Istanbul, Turkey. The summit brought together delegates from 173 United Nations member states, 55 heads of state and government representatives, around 350 people from the private sector, and more than 2,000 civil society, non-governmental organisation and faith-based organisation representatives. The Salvation Army was represented by Lieut-Colonel Eirwen Pallant (Deputy Director, International Social Justice Commission) and Major Alison Thompson (International Emergency Services Coordinator).

‘Australia one’– the process by which The Salvation Army’s two Australian territories will be amalgamated to become one – has begun today, 1 June 2016. Johannesburg-based advertising agency Ireland/Davenport, which worked with The Salvation Army’s Southern Africa Territory on a domestic violence awareness campaign, has been honoured with a Webby People’s Voice Award for the initiative. The award – one of the web’s most prestigious accolades – was the result of a vote by two million members of the public.

The theme for the 2016 International Day of Prayer for Children – scheduled for 3 April, the Sunday after Easter – is 'Right at the Heart'. This was also the theme for an international conference for territorial children’s and youth leaders that was held in September 2015 as a direct result of General André Cox's commitment to ensure that children and young people are an important priority for The Salvation Army. The Day of Prayer for Children seeks to provide one day a year on which the international Salvation Army can join together to offer focused prayer for young people.

The Salvation Army's ministry to refugees in Germany is featured in a short video that is now available online. Crowds of more than 7,000 people gathered at a temporary pandal (meeting hall) outside The Salvation Army’s secondary school in Kowdiar, Kerala, as General André Cox presented the Bible message at a united holiness meeting. With the venue overflowing, the international leader offered his own seat on the platform to an 80-year-old woman who had made a three-hour journey from Cherukole to join in prayer and worship. The General encouraged all Salvation Army officers present to give up their seats, exemplifying the servant leadership evidenced by Jesus in the gospels.

Gallery 101, the exhibition area next to the public cafe at The Salvation Army's International Headquarters (IHQ) in London, has been transformed into an artist's workspace for a week. Güler Ates, an artist and lecturer at the Royal Academy, is working on a new composition which is being created especially for a London-wide art project that will take place throughout Lent. The project is based around the 14 traditional Stations of the Cross, each of which represents a different stage of Jesus' journey through Jerusalem to Calvary.

New Storage Facility Helps The Salvation 'Become Family' With Refugees in Leipzig, Germany // Dec 15, 2015

The Salvation Army in Leipzig, Germany, has set up a small 'light-build' warehouse to run as a base for its work with refugees. Help has been provided by the European Refugee Response Taskforce, territorial and divisional headquarters and also by Torsten Huebner, a manager with logistics company UPS, whose services were offered without charge. The construction was funded by the Salvation Army World Services Office, based in the USA.

A campaign launched by The Salvation Army in Australia to end human trafficking and slavery has been endorsed by the country's Prime Minister, the Hon Malcolm Turnbull. Writing on the day the Australian Freedom Network was launched – International Day for the Abolition of Slavery, 2 December – Mr Turnbull said: 'It’s important that all corners of the community join together to work towards the noble goal of eradicating slavery and human trafficking across the world by 2020 ... First Refugees Settle In at Salvation Army Centre in Italy // Nov 17, 2015

New Chief of the Staff and World Secretary for Women's Ministries Welcomed to International Headquarters // Nov 6, 2015

Grace, trust, love and commitment were the themes that flowed through the welcome to the new Chief of the Staff, Commissioner Brian Peddle, and World Secretary for Women's Ministries, Commissioner Rosalie Peddle at International Headquarters (IHQ) in London. Distinguished guests – including former international leaders Commissioner Gisèle Gowans, General John Larsson (Rtd) and Commissioner Freda Larsson, and General Shaw Clifton (Rtd) – joined IHQ officers and staff for the celebration. None received greater recognition than the Peddles' daughters, Stephanie and Krista, who had flown across the Atlantic to surprise their mother. They were thanked by General André Cox – and others – for sharing their parents with the wider Army.

As they entered retirement, the commissioners' 45-year service was recognised by General André Cox and Commissioner Silvia Cox (World President of Women's Ministries), who led meetings across the Detroit area over the weekend.


Exhibition and Fashion Show at International Headquarters Make Clear that 'Each Life Counts' // Nov 3, 2015

The exhibition, featuring clothes designed and created by residents from the Salvation Army Housing Association (SAHA), in coordination with the IHQ Communications team, ends its run on Saturday 14 November.

Much was made of the retiring leaders' warmth and friendliness, but also of their dedication to serve God in The Salvation Army – even delaying their retirement and moving thousands of miles from their family in response to General André Cox's request for Commissioner Roberts to serve as his Chief.

The opening of the latest meeting of the International Theological Council (ITC) – formerly known as the International Doctrine Council – was attended by the Chief of the Staff (Commissioner William Roberts), who gave a thought-provoking devotional message and outlined some aspects of General André Cox’s agenda for the ITC and its work in the coming days. The Chief of Staff (Commissioner William Roberts) and Commissioner Nancy Roberts (World Secretary for Women's Ministries) received a traditional bread-and-salt welcome to the Russian capital, Moscow, where they inaugurated the new Russia Command and installed the new officer commanding, Lieut-Colonel Alexander Kharkov. In recent years the country has been part of the Eastern Europe Territory, but Russia became a Salvation Army command in its own right on 1 August 2015.

Salvationist, friends and members of the public can join The Salvation Army's 150th anniversary celebrations through an opportunity to see 'behind the scenes' at International Headquarters (IHQ) during Open House London 2015. A citywide celebration of the buildings, places and spaces where people live and work, Open House provides a unique opportunity to see, explore and learn about London's amazing architecture and design over one weekend, offering access to more than 700 buildings in the city and allowing people to see areas that are usually closed to the public. IHQ will feature on Saturday 19 September, opening from 10am to 4.30pm.

The General Holds Warm Meeting with Grand Imam from Lahore // Jun 11, 2015

General André Cox today hosted a visit from The Grand Imam Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, from the Badshahi Mosque in Lahore, Pakistan – the second-largest mosque in south Asia and fifth-largest in the world. Commemorative Salvation Army Coin Produced by the Royal Mint // Jun 1, 2015

The Royal Mint in the United Kingdom is issuing a special £5 coin honouring 150 years of The Salvation Army. The coin is to be struck for Alderney – one of the Channel Islands situated between the south coast of England and France. A Royal Mint representative says that, having made contact with their colleagues around the world, they believe this is the first Salvation Army coin created by an official mint.

The  International Theological Council (formerly known as the International Doctrine Council) has met for the first time under its new name and charter at Sunbury Court, near London. The recently appointed Chair of the Council, Lieut-Colonel Dr Karen Shakespeare, welcomed new members to their first meeting: Commissioner Denise Swansbury (International Headquarters), Colonel Grace Chepkurui (Kenya West Territory), and Major Donna Evans (The Netherlands and Czech Republic Territory). The fourth new member, Major Arif Masih (Pakistan Territory), was unable to be present due to visa difficulties.

March of Witness along The Mall is Confirmed with 150 Days until 150th Anniversary // Mar 5, 2015

London, 1 February 2015/IHQ/ – WITH just 150 days to go until The Salvation Army's 150th anniversary, Salvationists and friends around the world are counting down to the landmark anniversary congress Boundless – The Whole World Redeeming. The 1-5 July event will be the most diverse international gathering in the Army's history, with delegates expected to converge on The O2 in east London from all 126 countries in which the church and charity ministers.
